I’ve been a fan of the Mortal Kombat series for as long as I can remember. That said, I don’t think my fandom will be dropping off any time soon considering the gameplay trailer for Mortal Kombat X that was shown at the Sony E3 Press Conference.
Mortal Kombat X had been in a state of tease for a little over a month with Ed Boon (co-creator of the Mortal Kombat series) creatively dangling clues through his Twitter account. Last week the imminent release was announced along with a rather beautiful trailer for the game.
Although it seems that NetherRealm Studios have forsaken the dynamic camera angles and absolutely stunning visuals from the trailer, the game does not look like it’s going to be a slouch in terms of gameplay or graphics.
As seen in the trailer, NetherRealm kept good on their word to showcase two brand new fighters. They even slipped in a bit of a look at a third. The first was an insectoid woman, unnamed at this point, and I believe to be a first for the series (insectoid, not female). She tends to use what I think to be stingers, which emerge from her back, to attack.
We got to see her trade blows with the other new character, or characters depending on how you look at them, an unnamed armored duo which has a smaller male riding on the back of a noticeably larger one. If you’ve played Borderlands then think of a midget riding a Bullymong, they looked a lot like that. The larger male uses heavy handed techniques while the smaller is shown to be able to dismount and wield dual knives to their foe’s dismay.
The third character revealed (whom we saw much less of) appeared to be an Aztec. He’s got a blue and green color palette and he’s sporting a headdress, as well as the man-skirt which is normally seen to be worn in Aztec cultures. Though he could possibly be confused for a mer-person (due to his coloring) at first glance, he has a fatality, I assume, which has him bathing in the blood of an opponent’s heart. That seems pretty Aztecan to me.
Certainly last but not least, the game will see a return to the X-Ray Attacks that appeared in Mortal Kombat 9, a fan favorite, or most hated addition, depending on who you ask.
I am SO happy that they didn’t reveal absolutely uninteresting characters. I was hoping that this wouldn’t be a repeat of NetherRealm’s addition of Kobra to Mortal Kombat: Deception and they did not let me down. I’m happy with everything I saw and now I just want more. I want to see more new characters, more stages (the boat stage was interesting), and just more in general. I’m ready to perform some fatalities, are you?
