During their financial release, Sony gave its goals for what it wishes to accomplish in its PlayStation division. This includes how many units it wishes to sell in the next year.
According to Siliconera, Sony wants PlayStation to sell 17 million home consoles in the next fiscal year. This includes both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. Similarly, they would like to sell 3.5 million portable consoles, including the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation Portable.
During the last fiscal year, which lasted from April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014, the company had a major loss, even losing $78 million in the PlayStation division due to costs related to the PlayStation 4. During this time, the company sold a total of 14.6 million home consoles and 4.1 million portable consoles.
My Opinion:
These are ambitious goals for the home market, which means that PlayStation has something up its sleeves in terms of system sellers for the PS4 if it wants to surpass the large number of consoles already in the market. I believe this can be done, but with E3 coming up soon, it seems like Sony will play its hand and show consumers why they should be getting a PS4 if they haven’t already. Sadly, though, Sony only wants to sell 3.5 million portable consoles. I was hoping that they would have something big for the Vita, but since they are predicting less portable consoles sold than the last fiscal year, it seems like the console of Life is almost dead.
