Just like the original PlayStation and the PlayStation 2, Sony has announced its intention to continue supporting the PlayStation 3 well into the new console generation, as long as there is demand for the console.
In an interview with GamesIndustry, Sony Worldwide Studios America Software Product Development Head Scott Rhodes states that the PlayStation 3 continues to sell around the world and Sony will continue to support the console with both first party and third party games as long as there is still demand for the it.
“People are still buying PS3s…All the different parts of the world just adopt new technology at different rates. We don’t know how long the PS3 tail will last. We don’t know how it will be compared to the PS2. The PS2 lasted very deep into the PS3 cycle.
There was a broad price difference between PS3 launch and PS2 end of life. We don’t know where all this is going to go, but we will continue to support the PS3 through first and third parties as long as there is a good business there for us.”
With over 80 million units sold worldwide and the numbers are still increasing, Sony continues to expand the PlayStation brand into new markets, which may lead to an increase in demand and sales for the PlayStation 3. Sony has already launched initiatives that demonstrate their continued support for the console.
My Opinion:
I love my PS3 and I don’t see myself abandoning the console for a few more years. The next generation of consoles is still in its early stages and developers are still getting used to developing games for them. It is good to hear that Sony hasn’t abandoned the PlayStation3 and new games will continue to be released on the console.
