A report coming from Venture Beat claims that Google is on the verge of buying the popular streaming website, Twitch.
Venture Beat’s lead writer Dean Takahashi broke the story, stating that he is getting his information from “confirmed sources familiar with the matter”. Takahashi also stated that a price and announcement are still not yet confirmed. However, the price is rumoured to be close to one billion dollars.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard this rumour; Wall Street Journal reported a couple of months ago that Google were interested in buying Twitch and had made an offer. Although it did state that it was in early stages.
Twitch has been highly successful in recent years and its popularity is increasing. Both of the next generation consoles have the ability to stream to Twitch, and has shown to be highly success among consoles gamers.
My Opinion:
Well, it’s not the most surprising thing that I’ve heard. What is surprising is the price – even if it is just a rumour. Back in 2006, Google bought YouTube for $1.65 billion, which is of course more today due to inflation, but I would expect Twitch to cost more than a one billion dollars, as it is getting ever more popular with the gaming audience!
