Sigh…It was only three days ago that I posted a summary of the events that have occurred within Crytek. Employees weren’t being paid, and members of projects had walked out. Just when we hoped the issues had come to their climax, more stories have surfaced.
Jason Schreier’s coverage on Kotaku continued with two stories today, the first of which covered Deep Silver’s acquisition of the Homefront IP. An update followed within that same article with a statement from Crytek confirming that the two parties are in discussions:
“Firstly, Crytek has been in extensive discussions with leading producer and distributor of digital entertainment products, Koch Media, regarding the acquisition of rights for the “Homefront” IP. On completion of the proposed acquisition, the Homefront team from Crytek’s Nottingham studio would transfer their talents to Koch Media in compliance with English law and continue their hard work on upcoming shooter, “Homefront: The Revolution”. Both parties hope to finalize and implement a deal soon.”
Only hours later, Schreier posted that Crytek’s US staff had quit last week. He quoted one employee of the former office:
“Everyone at that studio was incredibly talented, and they got scooped up quickly by studios that actually pay their employees…”
My Opinion:
…Sigh…As I previously mentioned I am a fan of Crytek and some of the work they’ve done in the past. I truly hoped that this situation had found its conclusion. I do not think Crytek is the next THQ however. To my knowledge Crytek is still under EA’s wing and it would not shock me to hear that EA would help them through their troubles. Also, as sad as it is to say, not having employees to pay saves a lot of money
