I have been releasing my top six most anticipated PlayStation 4 games over the last several days. These games are not all exclusive to the PlayStation 4 but they will still be released on it. In my opinion it doesn’t matter if a game is on both consoles as long as it is still on the system I will be playing it on. So without further ado, here is my most anticipated game on the PlayStation 4.
NUMBER 1: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
CD Projekt RED. If you haven’t already heard of this developer, believe me when I say, youWILL know who they are by Fall 2014. They are a relatively small video game development company based in Poland that developed the Witcher video games. Next fall they will be continuing the series with their release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
So I imagine not everybody knows what the series is all about, correct? I would LOVE nothing more than to give you a little background information to catch you up! If you already know all of this, feel free to scroll down to the next section! The Witcher video game series is based off of a series of books by Andrzej Sapkowski. Both the book series and the game take place in a medieval fantasy world. In this world there are people (using that word loosely) called “Witchers” that travel the lands and hunt monsters for bounty. They are able to do this because they have unnatural powers that they were given, most of the time not by choice. Witchers are given special training and have their bodies modified by potions at a young age. This provides them with their supernatural abilities so that they can fight dangerous monsters. The books and the video game series follow one particular Witcher named Geralt of Rivia, a badass monster hunter with nicknamed the “White Wolf.”
I personally recommend everyone play the first two games in order to fully understand what is going to happen in the new game. They are REALLY good games. Not perfect, but really good nonetheless! IT could be a problem for most of you to play these though as the first game is only on PC and the second is on both PC and Xbox 360. It has been stated by the developers that you do not need to know what happened in them to be able to understand this game but I still recommend them. I would also recommend that you read the book series as well! Look them up on Amazon and you can get them for a cheap price, but they haven’t localized them all yet. I do not want to spoil anything for anyone though so I will try to avoid that as best as possible! If I spoil something, forgive me! Hopefully you will forget it by the time the game comes out next year! So let’s move on to why I am so damn excited for The Witcher 3!
The trailer above was released in February of this year. HOLY CRAP! There was nothing definitive shown in that trailer, but I was fanboying out! The badass music combined with the awesome symbol? This did nothing more than to let us all know the expected; The Witcher 3 was real and in development as we speak. It was later revealed that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will end the story arc that was started during the first game. We will finally have an end to it all! This in itself excites me so much! I hate playing games and not knowing what happens next due to cliffhangers or unanswered questions! (Final Fantasy XIII-2). Alright, time to have a look at the next trailer!
DAMN. A little bit of back story is given during the beginning of the trailer to let you know what is going on. You get to see the beautiful graphics, the fighting mechanics, the crazy monsters, and get to read about the new exciting parts of the game such as the “Multi-Region Open World” with no loading screens. This is something that has everyone excited. If you’ve played games like Skyrim and Kingdoms of Amalur, you know that some of these games can have HUGE worlds, but there are loading screens all over. Well this one is boasting that the world will be “30 times larger” than previous Witcher games and “20% bigger than Skyrim.” I cannot wait to explore the lands that I have been reading about and playing in partially during the previous games! One of the best parts of these open world games is to just wonder around and see what kind of trouble you can find! This will be no different.
The story in this game will be similar to the previous games in that it is nonlinear, but will be changed slightly due to the fact that now the game will be open world. The developers want to create an “open environment with a complex, multi-thread story.” They will accomplish this by giving the player a complex story that features multiple choices that all have different consequences. These consequences will sometimes be immediate or sometimes take a long time to develop. They can also be something significant like changing the way the story unfolds completely or as insignificant an NPC disliking you. CD Projekt RED has said that the game will take around 100 hours to complete the main story and open-world quests. Again, this sounds similar to games like Skyrim. This is great because when I play a game as big as this, I want it to last as long as possible!
If you did not watch the trailer above this, you are doing yourself a disservice. It is one of the more badass trailers I have seen for a video game in a long time. It shows you just how morally ambiguous the Witcher series is. Witchers hunt monsters; monsters are not always what you think. Geralt is a badass. Now here is another video which features the developers talking about the game.
It is hard for me to express just how excited I am for this game. I have read all of the books released in English so far and have played the games. The moment this game was announced I knew it was going to be my most anticipated next gen game. We now sit less than 24 hours away from the release of the PlayStation 4 and probably a year away from the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and I CAN’T FREAKING WAIT! This is the game that SCREAMS next gen. It is everything I have ever wanted in a fantasy game. It is everything I have ever wanted in an open world role playing game. It is finally coming, and it is coming to PlayStation for the first time! Next fall cannot come soon enough. This game will change the landscape of RPGs. If you want to know more information about The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, I recommend you check out this story from Kotaku. It is the best one I have found.
