Nintendo Direct Round-up

Nothing puts a fire in Nintendo’s pants like low sales. And while I hate to see Nintendo hurting, this has been one of the better suprise directs I have seen in a while. As a quick recap, we will fire off the highlights of today’s broadcast.

  • Zelda “Hyrule Warriors” (working title) will be a Wii U crossover of the Legend of Zelda and the Dynasty Warriors hack and slash style. Featuring areas and monsters from the game, the trailer shows Link going nuts on a couple of bosses and moblins. The game will be available 2014.
  • Kirby Triple Deluxe on the 3DS will also be making its appearance in 2014, featuring the traditional Kirby adventure mode with 20 abilities, a King Dee Dee Dee rhythm game, and a PvP Kirby battle game.
  • Yoshi’s New Island is also getting a 2014 release on the 3DS, and the trailer shows a returning Yoshi Island face.
  • Chibi Robo Photo Finder is an upcoming 3DS AR title where Chibi Robo (from the Gamecube title Chibi Robo) finds items around the player’s house to fit the shapes requested. The player takes a picture of these items with the camera and they are added to the in-game museum. The game also features the wacky mini-game aspects of the original title and community events to win special clothing. It is set to release January 9th with both a demo and full version.
  • Bravely Default is making the 3DS debut Feburary 7th — the demo will be coming out January 2nd featuring a side-quest not included with the story that will let you try out the new battle system.
  • Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze for the Wii U made another showing with an official re-announcement of Cranky Kong and the Kong Pow moves. The game is set to release February 21st.
  • Sonic Lost World on the Wii U has incoming free DLC today which feature new levels based on traditional Nintendo franchises. While one is still in the works, today’s level featured a Yoshi’s Island themed stage.
  • Wii Sports Club, a game that has been out for a while on the Wii U showcasing a redefined version of the Wii’s critically acclaimed Wii Sports, is having another 24 hour demo as well as releasing the Golf aspect of the game. The new golf section features the Wii’s traditional Golf level as well as a new USA level crafted by Iwata more than 20 years ago.
  • Nintendo plugged their Mario and Luigi themed Wii controllers.
  • NES Remix comes out today on Wii U, with a collection of 16 traditional NES games reimagined in a new more challenging light. The game features elements of the critically acclaimed Super Mario 3D World like sharing time via the Miiverse and collecting stamps as achievements. The games have some interesting twists–Mario backwards, Link in Donkey Kong, etc.
  • Dr. Luigi made a showing, a twist on the original Dr. Mario game. The game is set to release Dec. 31st, 2014 and continues in the spirit of the Year of Luigi. The game has a Tetris feel, is coming out on the Wii U, and will feature unique “L” shaped pills.
  • Last but not least, Rosalina was announced as a playable character for Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U and 3DS–welcome news for Galaxy fanatics and people happy to see more female roles in video games.
  • Mario Kart 8 had a showing. The graphics look amazing and I loved the feel of this game. It is set to be our in 2014.

My Opinion

Man, does it feel good to be a Nintendo fan today! The Chibi Robo announcement alone would have had me swimming, but there is simply so much news! It is clear that Nintendo’s strong line-up for the Wii U and 3DS will be continuing through 2014. As I said before, a desperate Nintendo is the best Nintendo, and man are we seeing the best.
