During the conference in which Sony announced the UK release of the PlayStation Vita slim, general manager Fergal Gara displayed a graph showing the progression of the subscriber base of PlayStation Plus.
The graph shows that the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers has nearly tripled since the PlayStation 4’s launch nearly three months ago now.
This giant increase in subscribers is obviously a direct result of Sony making the service required for most multiplayer games.
The PlayStation Plus service launched back in 2010 as a premium service that gave away several free games every month. The service was never able to push very big numbers, despite universal acclaim, but now that it is required for multiplayer on PS4, the numbers have increased dramatically.
My Opinion
I expected a large increase in subscribers now that it’s almost essential for PS4, but damn! I didn’t expect the subscriber base to triple, that’s pretty amazing by anybody’s standards, I’m very happy for SOE.
