Nintendo has over 50 games in development for the Wii U, all of which use the Unity engine.
Senior Manager of Marketing at Nintendo of America’s Licensing Department, Damon Baker, told Siliconera that over 50 games are currently on their way to Nintendo’s newest system. Baker said. “We have 17 that are currently in the pipeline, that have been submitted. So they will all be out within the next two months. And then, we have another fifty that are waiting in the wings, that are coming; so we’ve got a lot of Unity content on the way.”
At their GDC booth, nine games were displayed, including new games like Armillo and others that have already been released like Stick it to the Man.
This is a result of an initiative last year that gave Unity users easy access to Wii U development. This project also spawned Nintendo Web Framework, which is a development environment to help get more indie games on the Nintendo eShop.
My Opinion
If the Wii U needs something, it’s games. Since the big name developers are not going to help it, or in the case of Watch Dogs, delaying help to it, then it is up to the indies to save the Wii U from being last in the eighth generation race. Even though I don’t own a Wii U and this isn’t a system seller for me, I would like to see all of these indie games like Stick it to the Man come to the console, especially if they can use the gamepad in ways that make it better than their other counterparts, like Rayman Legends did. Personally, Nintendo needs one big push to get me over to the Wii U, but at least I know that when I’m there, I will not be starving for games.
