Amazon has just announced their own personal TV set-top box on Amazon.com. Called the Amazon Fire TV, the compact box will feature video games from big-name publishers and a multitude of video streaming applications.
Ubisoft, Double Fine, Telltale Games, Disney Sega, Gameloft, and EA will be bringing their wares to the Amazon Fire TV, and thousands of games are expected to show up within the next few months, including Minecraft, The Walking Dead, and the Amazon-developed Sev Zero.
The Amazon Fire TV won’t just be streaming Amazon’s services; the device will share space with Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, WatchESPN, and other services that are coming later. For music lovers, Pandora, iHeartRadio, and your Amazon music library will also be stream-able.
For those worried about searching with a remote, the Amazon Fire TV’s controller comes with a built in microphone, so searching for content is as easy as talking.
Amazon Fire TV has a quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and a dedicated graphics card. Video and audio will be delivered in 1080p via HDMI ports.
The Amazon Fire TV set-top box will retail at $99, and the game controller (sold separately) will retail for $39.99. Both are currently available for purchase.
My Opinion
Amazon is one of the few companies out there that I actually trust, and the Amazon Fire TV seems like a nifty companion to your normal TV. If I were to buy any of these set-top boxes on the market, I’d pick Amazon over Apple TV or Roku.
That being said, I have no interest in this product. I pretty much live in front of my PC, so there wouldn’t be any reason for me to buy this.
