Xbox One Getting Another Sci-Fi TV Exclusive

Xbox One users can look forward to Humans, a sci-fi television show from Xbox Entertainment and UK’s Channel 4.

According to IGN, the television show, an adaptation of the Swedish drama Real Humans, will focus on a family adopting a secondhand robot servant in their home in a world where robots are the norm. This particular robot, however, has a secret inside that may lead to “‘far-reaching and chilling consequences.’”

This television show will air on Channel 4 in the UK while Xbox One users in North America will be able to watch it on their consoles. It is unclear whether or not those in the UK will be able to watch all eight one hour-long episodes on their consoles as well.

Casting for the show has yet to be announced, although Spooks writer Jonathan Brackley and Sam Vincent have been recruited. The show is set to debut in 2015.

This comes on the heels of Sony’s first attempt at original programming with Powers, an adaptation of the police procedural comic by Brian Michael Bendis. Also, Xbox One users shouldn’t forget about the Halo television series being headed by Steven Spielberg.

My Opinion

I have a fear that Microsoft and similarly Sony, with Powers, may have way too much competition on the market today for this strategy to work well. Unlike games, these television shows are nothing more than perks for early adoption at this point in time. Saying that, I am glad that Xbox One users and PlayStation 4 owners are getting something like this, as this could be the future of television. However, with Netflix and Hulu in the scene, game consoles needs more than eight hours of content in order to justify these TV exclusives as system sellers. Time will tell if more directors latch on to the idea of console TV and make it a thing.
