Nintendo has revealed its sales numbers for last year.
According to IGN, Nintendo has only sold 6.7 million Wii U consoles since launch in November of 2012. The 2.7 million consoles sold last year comes in below Nintendo’s predicted sales figures of 2.8 million.
However, this will not bankrupt the company. Polygon reported that Nintendo is sitting on a $14 Billion cash reserve which can help them weather the dry sales of their home console for a long time. Luckily, the 3DS’ lifetime sales of 43.3 million helps ease the sting of poor Wii U sales. With E3 around the corner, Nintendo will showcase upcoming software for its consoles in an effort to continue to raise sales.
My Opinion:
Nintendo is going to be okay. The Wii U didn’t catch on like they had hoped, and perhaps the viral success of the Wii made them a bit lazy in the promotion and marketing of the Wii U. It is possible that a different name for the Wii U would have also had a chance at higher sales numbers. All of that aside, the company has what they have on the table now. It will be interesting to see how they get behind the console in the next two years. Games like Super Smash Bros. Wii U and Mario Kart 8 will likely move a few more consoles. But we will see what they have up their sleeve at E3 this year. I’m a fan of Nintendo, and I really like the Wii U. If they could just push it better, it could become profitable. I think they could leverage the 3DS into the Wii U to make it happen. If all future Nintendo games were cross-buy and cross-save, I’d certainly buy more software from them.
