Bandai Namco to Continue Supporting Dark Souls after GFWL Shutdown

Bandai Namco announced, via their Tumblr page, that they will continue supporting Dark Souls on PC after Games for Windows Live (GFWL) shuts down on July 1st, 2014.

The announcement said “Dark Souls will remain fully functional on GFWL for the foreseeable future. BANDAI NAMCO Games is currently seeking avenues to continue support and ensure the functionality of Dark Souls on other services. We will have more news and updates to share on this in the coming months.” As of right now GFWL is required to play multiplayer and co-op mode in Dark Souls.

In August it was reported that GFWL would be shutting down on July 1st, 2014. This was received with a mixture of joy and concern. Most PC gamers did not enjoy GFWL as a form of DRM. However, there is now concern that if developers do not patch these games to run without GFWL, they will be left unplayable.

My Opinion:

I am glad to see another developer stepping up and trying to continue support after the removal of GFWL. Personally, I hope they just patch it for steamworks like many other developers did for their games.
