Na-na-na-na. Na-na-na-na. Hey, hey, hey. Goodbye…. The PlayStation Portable, or the PSP, has officially been discontinued in Japan just short of its tenth birthday.
Even though the handheld has already been discontinued in North America, the PSP has still had some hold on the Japanese market until now. It has sold over 80 million units worldwide.
The PSP’s younger brother, the PlayStation Vita, has not had a similar success in both Japan and North America, and Sony has expressed doubts about if it would ever reach the success of the Vita.
My Opinion:
It was good to see the PSP have a long life cycle, but it is time to let the Vita take its place. The Vita needs to thrive in the market by itself, and if Sony can overcome some of the hurdles that the Vita is facing right now like pricey memory cards, then the Vita could become immensely successful. However, only time will tell. Long live the Vita.
