Mighty No.9, the successful Kickstarter project and spiritual successor of the Megaman series by veteran game designer and producer Keiji Inafune, will be getting a CG animated cartoon series and possibly more.
Tokyo-based animation studio Digital Frontier (whose previous works include the Resident Evil and Tekken CG animated movies) will be developing the series for a worldwide market.
The official YouTube channel for Mighty No. 9: The Animated Series describes the story:
“The story focuses on BECK, a weak transforming combat robot, who was made to fight in a combat robot league as a part of the MIGHTY NUMBERS, the strongest robots in the world. When Beck is the only robot spared from a virus that forces his teammates to destroy mankind, he has to find a way to overcome his own inadequacies so that he can stop them.”
In addition, Inafune is also speaking with Contradiction Films writer and producer Tim Carter for a possible live-action movie adaptation of the game.
“It’s not actually a 100 percent set deal yet,” he said. “It is something we are looking forward to and considering the possibilities of. We are in talks with Contradiction about the possibility of making a live-action Mighty No. 9 movie.”
Inafune has previously expressed interest in growing Mighty No.9 as a franchise that includes comic books, manga, anime, tv shows and movies.
Also, Keiji Inafune has announced a second crowdfunding campaign for Mighty No.9 with brand new stretch goals to add additional content to the game.
The series is planned for a release in 2016 with the game’s release expected to be in Spring 2015.
My Opinion:
The game hasn’t been released yet but Mighty No.9 is slowly growing as a franchise into different mediums. I guess this shows how confident Keiji Inafune is with Mighty No.9 and its potential to obtain a global audience whether that is through the game or with other forms of media.
