Nintendo will be giving you the opportunity to analyze your sleep and fatigue levels with their first quality of life product, a sensor that measures both.
Satoru Iwata, CEO of Nintendo, explained that it will not need to be worn or interacted with. Instead, you place the sensor on your bedside table and it will automatically start to measure the details of your sleep. Iwata explained it by saying: insert block quote
“Inside the QOL Sensor is a non-contact radio frequency sensor, which measures such things as the movements of your body, breathing and heartbeat, all without physically touching your body.”
The data gathered by the sensor will be transmitted to a cloud server where it will then be given back to the user in graph form. Furthermore, the users will be given advice to help them improve their sleep like changing their diet or exercising more.
For this project, Nintendo has partnered with Dr. Yasuyoshi Watanabe and ResMed. Dr Watanabe is an expert in fatigue science and ResMed develops medical equipment and is based in the US.
While the sleep and fatigue deprivation sensor doesn’t require a 3DS or Wii U, Iwata believes that it’s possible to use video games to improve QOL. He also wishes to expand the definition of the platforms “without being bound to traditional thinking.” The sleep and fatigue deprivation sensor will be released in 2016.
My Opinion:
I’m personally not very interested in Nintendo’s QOL ventures. I love Nintendo games, but I’m not going to buy a sleep and fatigue deprivation sensor because my favourite video game company made it. Also, I find the idea a bit creepy.
