What happens when classic 80’s game characters come to life and attack Earth? Adam Sandler has the answer for you in his latest film Pixels. Releasing this summer, Pixels sees aliens mistaking a peaceful mission from NASA as a declaration of war. When NASA launches a time capsule into space containing aspects of American culture, including video games, aliens get the wrong idea. Instead of coming in peace, they come in the form of retro game characters out for destruction. That’s when Adam Sandler steps in.
Sandler plays former arcade champion Sam Brenner, called upon to help fight the aliens by the President of the United States. The President happens to be a childhood friend of Sandler and is played by Kevin James. Joining them in the fight are actors Josh Gad, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Monaghan, and Ashley Benson. Watch the trailer below and see what happens when everything from Galaga and Q-Bert to Donkey Kong and Pac-Man come to attack Earth.
Pixels is scheduled for release on July 24th.
My Opinion:
I haven’t been the biggest fan of some of Sandler’s latest films, but Pixels shows promise. The concept behind it is really cool to me as a gamer and has the potential to be a lot of fun. Movies based on videogames don’t have a great track record, but when they are used as inspiration like in the film Wreck-It-Ralph the results can be wonderful. I’m hoping Pixels finds the right mix of comedy and nostalgia to deliver a solid movie and do the game characters justice.
