I will be releasing my top six most anticipated PlayStation 4 games over the next several days. These games are not all exclusive to the PlayStation 4 but they will still be released on it. In my opinion it doesn’t matter if a game is on both consoles as long as it is still on the system I will be playing it on. So without further adieu, here is one of my most anticipated games on the PlayStation 4.
NUMBER 4: Final Fantasy XV
I came to the Final Fantasy scene a little bit late, so I started with Final Fantasy XIII. I was completely blown away by the game. I know that most fans of the original games in the series hated XIII, but since I started with it I believe that it is amazing. This leads me to Final Fantasy Versus XIII, err I mean Final Fantasy XV.
This game was announced all the way back in 2006 as Final Fantasy Versus XIII and would run alongside a few other games in the “XIII series”. This never came to be however. Versus XIII had a super long development time and disappeared from just about all news. Fans speculated that the project had been dropped for a few years until recently. During the Sony press conference at E3 this year, Tesuya Nomura announced that Versus XIII was being changed to Final Fantasy XV and would be released on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the future. This extends the already long development time, but will make the game ultimately better because it will be on next gen consoles. I stayed at home the night of the Sony press conference instead of going to a concert, and the first half of the press conference made me feel like I wasted my time. Then they announced they had a special guest that was going to make an announcement and my heart stopped. I thought to myself, “It couldn’t be the next Final Fantasy could it?” Well, it was! As soon as I saw the trailer start I sat up in my bed to get closer to the TV. Then at the end when it popped up and said “Final Fantasy Versus XIII” but exploded and was replaced by “Final Fantasy XV” I started screaming. Yes, this shows how much of a Final Fantasy fanboy I have become. I love it
The story is based on the Fabula Nova Crystallis mythology from the XIII series, but apparently has no direct relation to the other games. It will be set in a unique world, with different visual designs, and new characters. It follows the story of Noctis Lucis Caelum, the prince of a mafia-like royal family that protects the last crystal in the world. They rule over a very advanced city-state. Everything is peaceful until there is an invasion from a warring nation that is trying to obtain the final crystal.
The gameplay is like an action role-playing game with some third-person shooter elements. It seems much more similar to the older Kingdom Hearts style of gameplay than of Final Fantasy. This makes me super excited for it. I know that there is a cry for the Final Fantasy series to go back to turn based battles, but in my opinion those are becoming outdated. It is not that turn based battles are bad, it’s just that the only reason turn based battles were used was because of technical constraints that Square-Enix no longer has. They can make open world action RPGs now. I fully endorse this move by Square-Enix. After watching the gameplay trailers for this game, I am so excited to play it.
Just as I am sure there are many classic Final Fantasy fans that are not excited about this game at all, I am also sure there are several newer Final Fantasy fans like myself and many more that have never played the series that are excited for this game. I cannot wait to get my hands on this game. I love the epic stories that the series tells in each game. I love how they are always innovating the gameplay mechanics. This game may be a few years out still, but you can bet that I will have this game pre-ordered whenever the release date is finally announced!
What about you? Are you excited to see where the Final Fantasy series goes next?
