Microsoft’s Xbox One is getting a DVR-style enhancement to its YouTube application starting tomorrow, according to a press release on Xbox.com.
Game DVR and Upload are among the most used apps on Xbox One…[S]tarting tomorrow we’re rolling out an update to the YouTube app on Xbox One that integrates Game DVR and Upload with YouTube, making it easier than ever to capture and share game clips with the world” the press release states.
“Now, use Game DVR to capture epic gaming moments, edit them in Upload Studio, and, with the simple click of a button inside the YouTube app…share them instantly to your YouTube channel.”
Alongside this new functionality, players can watch YouTube videos in Snap Mode, earn media-centric achievements, and add YouTube channels to One Guide for easy access.
Microsoft is also working on a GoPro application which will be launching on the Xbox 360 tomorrow and on Xbox One this summer.
My Opinion
With the Let’s Play craze still in an explosive state, I wonder if this is Microsoft’s way of trying to become a major part of that. There’s an entry barrier to starting, one that involves buying capture cards and editing software, but those are no longer needed come tomorrow. I’m not much into Let’s Play videos, but I do know they foster rather large (and sometimes vocal) communities with purchasing power. Allowing those communities to easily see and share video means more word-of-mouth coverage, and that’s good for Microsoft.
