According to NPD numbers, the Xbox One has shipped 5 million copies to stores and Titanfall outsold inFAMOUS: Second Son in March, but PS4 is still outselling the Xbox One by 2 million units.
The Xbox One and PC had the best selling game of March 2014 in the form of Titanfall. Secondly, the second best selling game was the PS4 exclusive inFAMOUS: Second Son. South Park: The Stick of Truth, Call of Duty: Ghosts and Dark Souls II round out the top five game sales in March 2014.
The Xbox One also had a momentous milestone today, as Microsoft released that the Xbox One had shipped over 5 million consoles to stores, selling 311,000 units in the US in March. In addition, players have spent about 5 hours a day each playing the Xbox One on average and over a billion hours collectively.
Impressive, however, this is about 2 million fewer consoles than the PS4 had at the same time.
My Opinion
This is not surprising. Titanfall outselling inFAMOUS makes sense, as it has a larger install base with the game launching on both Xbox One and PC. It also released more than a week earlier than inFAMOUS, giving it a head start. However, I am almost surprised at how poorly the Xbox One is doing against the PS4. In last generation’s console race, Sony and Microsoft were almost neck to neck at the end of the race, but the Xbox 360 was killing the PS3 earlier in the war. Here, Sony is outselling Microsoft by 40%. Plus, the PS4 numbers were based on consumer sales, while the Xbox’s numbers were based on sales to stores, which should be noted. This does make me wonder how much better the PS4 would do against the Xbox One if they kept the consoles in stock. Either way, it is starting to look like even though Microsoft won the battle with Titanfall, they still may be losing the war to Sony.
