Epic Adds Consoles To Unreal Engine’s $19 Subscription

Epic’s Unreal Engine 4 has got its first major update today, developers using Unreal Engine 4 will now be able to release their games on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Epic Games announced last month, at Game Developer’s Conference, that they would start offering a subscription model for their Unreal Engine 4. For only $19 a month and 5 percent of gross revenue made from the sales of the finished game, any developer can have access to Unreal Engine 4. However, this was only available to PC, Mac, iOS and Android at launch.

On the 24th of April, Epic Games released their first major update to Unreal Engine 4, Unreal Engine 4.1. The biggest addition in the update is the support for the next generation consoles, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Developers are now able to use Unreal Engine 4 and release their games on these consoles.

The update also adds other features like: official support for Linux and SteamOS, refined iOS and Android workflow and over 100 improvements in response to the community feedback. The full list can be seen on the Unreal Website website.

My Opinion

Ever since Epic announced this last month, I had always thought that for only $19 a month that this was a steal! Now, this has got even better. It is amazing that smaller developers can now have access to one of the most popular game engines currently used in games development. I can not wait to see what these developers come up with in the future!
