There are all kinds of controversial questions out there regarding the video game industry. Each and every Wednesday we will ask each member to give their opinion on one of them. Every once in a while we will have simpler questions that are more of a “Get to know your editor” type question, kind of like this week. This will give you a chance to see that we are not all like minded and have a wide range of opinions. Also: You the readers can submit questions for us to answer here. So feel free to submit them to this story or emailing them to mong.podcast@gmail.com
Week 1: What do you want to see out of E3 this year?
Courtney Osborn, Founder & Editor in Chief:
The one thing I want to happen this year is FINALLY have an announcement for Fallout 4. That’s it. I can’t freaking wait. Honestly, there are a lot of things that I want to hear about, but nothing will compare to my excitement about Fallout 4. [Don’t listen to Lou, he is crazy.]
I would like to hear an update on Uncharted PS4, Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts 3, Halo 5, and The Order: 1886 as well. But those are all obvious choices. What will be really cool this year is the slew of new IP announcements we will hear about. Now that the current generation of consoles have been revealed and released, developers will finally be able to show off the secret projects they have been working on. What is Sony Bend working on for instance? What about Santa Monica? There are so many unanswered questions that I hope we finally get the answers to.
Lou Contaldi, Senior Editor:
This is an easy one. All I want from E3 this year is Fallout 4. I’m like a junkie, I’ll take anything: a demo, a teaser, a symbol on the UI. It’s about time we heard head or tail on this matter, and Bethesda needs to bring the goods. [For the record, I wrote this before Courtney. He is being totally unoriginal and this is my way of shaming him.]
Beyond that, I think Nintendo may be poised to really kill at the show. At this point, no one is expecting anything from them. Meanwhile, nearly nothing has been mentioned about what is coming down the line after Smash Bros Wii U/3DS. I think we may be treated to some Legend of Zelda and possibly even Metroid trailers come E3–at least I hope so!
Chad Waller, Editor:
I want Nintendo to surprise me in a way that isn’t depressing. In a long-ago time, I was a Nintendo fanboy in a world of sorrow (high school); now I just don’t care. I’d like to though! So Nintendo, do something that’ll make me want to buy one of your products. Pretty please?
THQ fell through last year and lost all of their properties, my favorite of them being Darksiders. I’d like to see some mention of another one of those games. I’m curious to see what happens to the property as the Darksiders mythos is absolutely grand and worth continuing on.
Shawn Richards, Editor:
One thing: Games. Next.
Ok, I guess I can be more specific. For one thing, I want to see a reason to get a Wii U. Not one game in the Wii U library appeals to me, and if Nintendo can convince me of getting a Wii U, then Nintendo will have succeeded in their Nintendo Direct. Crucify me if you will, fair readers, but I do not want to see another Mario game for a while. I am sick and tired of the red plumber, and I want something new. The new Smash Bros. is going to be on the 3DS, so that will not be the system seller for me.
The same idea goes for Microsoft and the Xbox One. I know that several great games are out for the system like this Titanfall game I keep hearing about. Even with that massive game, I want to see the other games I was promised at the last E3 like Insomniac’s Sunset Overdrive. Seeing something massive from Microsoft studios is a definite here, especially with the franchises it has like Halo and Gears of War.
Even though I have a PlayStation 4, I still want to see more games from the first party studios that Sony has under its belt. Yes, we have seen what Guerilla and Sucker Punch have, but what about Sony Bend? Media Molecule? It hurt when people started calling it the “IndieStation 4”, but there is no denying that the lack of some largely anticipated games are not there or are lacking in quality (see Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes or Watch_Dogs [or Watch Dogs]). I would like to see more games to get me excited to be a gamer.
Mark Merville, PC Editor:
Make me finally decide if I want a PS4 or an XBone.
I know it sounds selfish, but if E3 and the gaming community in general could finally come together and solve the riddle of which “next gen” console Mark Merville will choose, that would really be great. Honestly neither system has shown anything that really grabs my attention.
My PC is still my favorite weapon of choice at the moment and I am also suffering some MMO withdrawals, so some juicy bits about a new game for me to sink too many years of my life into would be fantastic. I have been playing the Alpha releases of Shroud of the Avatar, and would love to see some more information on some vital game systems. More to the point, I want Richard Garriott to burst through the wall on horseback dressed as Lord British in Invulnerable Plate and announce that Shroud of The Avatar will have full open PvP and player stealing.
Brett Medlock, Editor:
Instead of rambling on about I want to see from a bunch of different developers, I’m gonna keep this simple with a list of the major things want to see on each platform at this years E3.
Nintendo
– Zelda Wii U
– Metroid Wii U
– More Smash Bros. Characters
– Mario Kart 8 DLC
Xbox
– More Quantum Break information
– Fable on XBO
– Halo 5
PlayStation
– Uncharted 4
– Infamous on PS Vita
– New 1st party game on Vita
– PS Now release date
Jonathan Smith, Editor:
Something new.
Don’t get me wrong, I am excited for a new Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Age, Halo, etc. Yet, I’ve seen all those worlds before. I’ve experienced those stories and had my fun with them. I want to hear and see something new. The new/current consoles are a perfect opportunity to experiment with new and crazy ideas. It’s why I am most excited for games like The Order, Sunset Overdrive, and Destiny. Show me that there is still some creativity left in the AAA development space, and blow my mind by taking me to places I had never dreamed. With that said…a new Fallout and news on the new Mass Effect would be great.
Brendan Jester, Editor:
Don’t keep toying with my emotions, Bethesda
Fallout 4 has been constantly in my brain since that one false trailer website came into the limelight. Now I just want to see another Fallout game or at least a confirmation of its existence. On top of that I am pumped to see some more content from Destiny and what that game is going to be like, because hot damn it looks good right now. Of course I am excited to see a possible Halo 5, which would snatch $60 from my wallet immediately. oh……I guess a new Uncharted would be cool too.
Chad Patrick, Editor:
After reading Resident Evil 7 rumors, I loathed the idea of having another QTE-filled Resident Evil title. If Capcom were to announce RE7, I’d probably be cautious like everyone else. The potential of the series going back to its roots is keeping me in check and that’s all I hope for the next title. If for some reason Capcom doesn’t announce RE7, then I wouldn’t mind a Dragon’s Dogma sequel (please, Capcom).
I’m also on the Fallout hype train (choo choo!) with Courtney and Lou. I can imagine how the teaser reveal could go: old-time music with the backdrop of a barren wasteland. Fade to black with the title card: FALLOUT… ONLINE.
Kidding. But a Fallout 4 announcement from Bethesda would be quite nice. However, a Red Dead announcement from Rockstar would blow that out of the water for me. Let’s face it though, Red Dead isn’t happening anytime soon… I think.
Oh and one more thing: Kojima should give the MGS fans one more trailer to analyze!
Steven Shearer, Editor:
I really want Phil Spencer to come out at the E3 conference and show us what the Xbox One is capable of; I don’t care about the power of the cloud, I care about how it affects gaming. Show me how it can improve the gaming experience. Also, I want to see new IP’s and also see more gameplay from games getting released this year. The only Microsoft exclusive that I have my eye on right now is: Sunset Overdrive I really, want to see more of it!
On the Sony side of things, I want to see what all the studios are working on, we already know what a handful of them are doing, now we need to see what the rest of them are doing. I also want to see the Vita getting attention.
Ryan Latuso, Editor:
I want to see Zelda WII U. Zelda is my favorite franchise by far and I am ready to see something. Say what you want about the Wii U, but Nintendo can steal the show with a new Zelda even if it is via a Nintendo Direct.
I would like to see more from Ubisoft about The Division. The game looks terrific but we know so little still. I would also like to see what Phil Spencer brings to Microsoft this year.
Dustin LaRoe, Editor:
I want to see everything from my Xbox One and/or PC as it happens. Give me demos, trailers, and even vertical slices so I can form my own opinions from the comforts of my own home.
I want to see what the unaffiliated studios are working on. Those studios who hold no allegiances to consoles, those who are not mired in franchised annual releases.
I also would like to see Microsoft do something drastic like cut the price of the Xbox One by something like $200. When Phil Spencer says that they are in the fight to win, I want to see them do stuff people won’t expect and completely unprepared for. I want them to do stuff that benefits the gamers.
I’d also like Nintendo to pour their hearts into saving the WiiU like they did with the 3DS. They can do it. The secret is simple: release more must-have games.
I’d like Sony to show me a game that will make me want to own a PS4. The closest I’ve seen was Infamous: Second Son. But even that game wasn’t good enough to make me want to put down any cash. C’mon Sony. Wow me.
Benjamin Luthi, Editor:
I’d love to see the return of some of Nintendo’s neglected franchises. Specifically, I want a new F-Zero. It’s been over ten years now since the last F-Zero game. It could work on 3DS or Wii U. Heck, they could make an enhanced port of F-Zero X and that would tide me over until they can make a proper new title. And while they’re at it, let’s get some new StarFox and Metroid games.
I’d also love to see more collaboration projects with major studios. Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney, the recent Yoshi and Zelda-themed worlds in Sonic Lost World, and the upcoming Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem are proof that good things can happen when big studios work together. I think it’s about time we have a non-sports Mario & Sonic game. Sega does what Nintendoes also.
Myles Farrington, Editor:
I’ll keep things pretty simple as my hopes for E3 rarely differ as the years past. I want more game announcements, I want more gameplay previews, especially for titles like The Division, new areas in Destiny, and some more info on Deep Down as well. E3 always seems like the best place to see all the new trailers and announcements so it’s always a very exciting time of year. You never know what you’re going to see.
On top of trailers and shiny things I would really like some news on certain titles. One that comes to mind is The Crew. The Crew is a title that got all of my friends’ interest, everyone wants to play it and customize their own dream cars, but when it was announced that the game would have micro-transactions it kind of lost a lot of the luster it had in our eyes. I would love specific information on what exactly these micro-transactions will be. I need to know how impactful they will be on how I play, because I don’t want to pay.
Lastly I really want to see more information and gameplay of Shadows of Mordor. The gameplay video that was already released looked absolutely gorgeous, and that was supposedly just in Pre-Alpha. If that’s to be believed then the game is going to be a blockbuster when it finally drops. All in all there’s a lot to be excited for. E3 is every gamers’ Christmas Eve, it gives you a moment to get a peek at what you’ll be unwrapping and getting your hands on soon.
Colin Conroy, Editor:
More than anything, I want Sony to show me that I was right to buy a PS4. The system definitely had some solid games at launch, and the indie community is thriving, but I’d like to see a new IP truly worthy of the next generation of gaming. As of right now, I think that The Order: 1886 is my best hope, so hopefully we’ll get to hear more about it. On a related note, I also hope that Sony stays committed to the Vita because I think that the industry as a whole would be better off with two successful handhelds on the market.
Turning my attention away from Sony exclusives, I’d love to see more of The Division and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. More news about Civilization: Beyond Earth wouldn’t hurt either. Of course, I’d also like Microsoft to give me a reason to pick up a shiny new Xbox One. I’ll always hold out hope for Alan Wake 2, but that’s almost certainly not coming anytime soon, so a new Halo 5 trailer should suffice.
Aaron Dobbe, Editor:
I’m looking for Nintendo to knock it out of the park. At least one big announcement for the Wii U is necessary, though hopefully there will be more. I would be absolutely shocked if we didn’t hear about the next Zelda, especially since Nintendo were actually considering showing it off last year. Personally, I’m really hoping for more details on Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem, a crossover that holds immense potential. It’s always fun to see two of my favorite franchises collide!
Hopefully Nintendo is careful not to neglect the 3DS, however. Even if it’s been immensely successful as of late, I’m a little worried about a drought of new titles once Super Smash Bros. is released. A surprise revival of an old franchise, a la Kid Icarus: Uprising, would be great to see. Either that or a new Advance Wars, which I will keep “predicting” every year until it actually happens.
Outside the Big N, I’ll be keeping my eyes out for new footage of Kingdom Hearts 3, Final Fantasy XV, and the new Mirror’s Edge. I gotta figure out when I need to get a PS4, after all!
Colin Oslin, Editor:
I want Microsoft to bring it. I want Phil Spencer to deliver what he he said he would. Games! New IP’s, sequels, prequels, whatever. I just want some amazing announcements.
As for specific titles, I am a huge fan of Forza Horizon so another one would be great. Also anything Mass effect related. The appearance of the long rumored Beyond Good and Evil 2 would also be a welcomed sight.
Audrey Lips, Editor:
I’m going to be looking forward to something much smaller than most would: more footage of the next Kingdom Hearts game! I have been obsessed with the games ever since the first one came out, and have been playing them religiously as they come out over the years. I’m stoked especially because the next KH game is going to be returning back to the PlayStation (the many handheld consoles were getting old, in my opinion).
Additionally, I also am eager to hear something about Fallout 4 for this year’s E3. It would be a bit of an understatement to say that we’re all ready for it, so why not appease us finally? I’ll also be looking forward to more Wii U games (aside from a Zelda game).
Mike Morrissette, Editor:
I swear to all that holy and sacred, if we don’t get a release date and at least a 5 minute gameplay trailer for FFXV, I’ll cast meteor myself right on top of SE’s office. Ain’t no phoenix downs saving anyone on that day. But really though, the game was announced in 2006? It’s about time we get some hard information.
Aside from that, Sony has been incredibly quiet when it comes to the first party studios. I’m expecting to hear some new IPs, and perhaps some kind of an update on Uncharted 4. I’m also really excited to hear more about PlayStation Now, it’s such an interesting concept, but I want to know their business model before I really buy into (Ha! Pun!) the program.
I really would also love for Nintendo to come out and officially state that their getting out of the hardware business, and only going to be focusing on software. But, they’ll probably just announce some new attachment for the Wii U that bakes cookies while you’re out, that way there’s a justifiable reason to actually turn the thing on. At least we’ll see some more Smash Brothers I guess, but Nintendo can’t rely on that alone to save their sinking ship.
Oh, I’d also like a good look at Fallout 4.
