Mortal Kombat News Possibly on the Horizon

The illustrious Ed Boon of NetherRealm Studios (Mortal Kombat) has been teasing something on his Twitter. Suspicions have it that Ed’s tweets are leading to an announcement about the next entry in the Mortal Kombat series.

So far the tweets have been little more than a countdown. However, Boon has been going about them in an interesting way in terms of posting numbers. He’s turned the countdown into a bit of a brain teaser by making us work for the number. For example instead of saying 29, he asked what the square root of 841 is. It’s certainly an interesting way to do things.

The countdown appears to be set to end right around E3, on June 2nd. Kiefer Sutherland’s (24)interview with IGN lends to the likelihood of an MK announcement as he mentioned “I did Mortal Kombat, and that’s such a huge game….” Between the possible Mortal Kombat announcement and the rumors of a coming Injustice: Gods Among Us 2, it sounds like this E3 is shaping up to be a big one for the folks over at NetherRealms.

My Opinion:

This is another great piece of news. I’ve always been a fan of the Mortal Kombat series. If I haven’t owned every title in the franchise, I’ve certainly played them all. On top of said fandom I might be in the minority when I say that I like where the story in Mortal Kombat (PS3/360) is taking the series. I feel like it’s a place for NetherRealms to really stretch their legs and make something new. Considering the sorry state of the good and evil factions this would be an absolute perfect time for new characters and possibly locales to make a showing.

Myles K Farrington is a new writer on the MONG team and a rather dapper fellow. Keep up with him over at IGN as well!
