Nintendo told Reuters that it will launch a new console and games for emerging markets. After recently suffering losses during its latest fiscal year, Nintendo is in search of new business opportunities. As to why Nintendo has decided to go this route, Satoru Iwata said the new console will be aimed at lower income families and those with less gaming experience. He also said that he has no intention to bring the Wii U or 3DS to those emerging markets.
“It would be difficult to enter those markets if we didn’t create something new… For the mass market you need to provide something that most of the middle class can afford,” Iwata said in an interview.
Iwata was said to be leaning towards China as one of his target emerging markets, especially after they recently lifted the ban on the sale of foreign consoles.
“We think the Chinese market has a lot of potential, but I don’t think the lifting of the ban has solved all of the difficulties in entering it. We need to study it more,” he said.
My Opinion:
Nintendo is smart for trying to find a different audience than Microsoft and Sony. I just wonder if this switch to targeting the middle class will be enough to keep Nintendo from sinking any further.

I wonder if this is the console that was rumored a couple weeks ago?
