Printing Money: An Open Letter to Microsoft and 343 Industries

Dear Microsoft,

Do me a favor and revive Halo Waypoint.

Instead of recreating the same multimedia mess I remember, make it a multiplayer Halo game. Don’t worry about putting in single player modes, save that for the numbered and subtitled Halo games from now on. Each time a new entry in the Halo series is released, you can update HaloWaypoint with content and assets from the latest game. Of course you can charge for this stuff as DLC for Halo Waypoint. This way, one team can crank out new maps, weapons, and game modes to always keep Halo multiplayer fresh without diverting the other team’s efforts toward balancing multiplayer aspects of their game.

This new and fresh Halo Waypoint could initially be released as free to play on the Xbox One for Xbox Live Gold members. Initially, Halo Waypoint could charge for character customization DLC. Eventually, the game could also make money if new maps, weapons and game modes were added on a frequent basis. It could either be a new map every month, or something like six maps every six months. You could also charge for XP (experience point) boosts as well, seeing that those types of transactions seem profitable in other free to play games.

A good place to start it out is with Halo 2’s multiplayer. This could coincide with the release of the rumored Halo 2 Anniversary. Taking this path would promote both games’ releases to the games press and the customers. If this is the timetable, then it would make sense for HaloWaypoint to start with the maps and game types from the first two Halo games. Later, when Halo 5 is released, the game types, maps, and weapons from Halo 5 could be added in. This would keep HaloWaypoint fresh for players, and free up the Halo 5 team to focus on the campaign modes.

The only drawback I can foresee is the fact that Microsoft and 343 Studios probably haven’t thought of this, or began working on it. They likely aren’t supportive of the idea of splitting Halo games into multiplayer and single player. I’m sure there are a multitude of technical challenges to come out of it as well. Somehow, they would have to figure out a way to create a multiplayer game engine that would be future proof enough to ride out as far as Halo 6 in order to make this a viable plan. I imagine that Microsoft is not willing to fund such an endeavor.

If Microsoft was willing to take all of these steps to create this pipe dream of mine, then I would be the first one to sign up.  I was a big fan of the Halo games up until Halo 4, and I am not looking forward to more of 343 Studio’s Halo games. I will most likely not buy Halo 5 and Halo 6. A plan like this would get me back on board and spending my hard earned cash on the Halo franchise once again.

All my love,

Dustin

Dustin LaRoe is pretty awful at games. If you want proof, watch him Twitch as Guy105.  His Gamertag and Steam ID are Guy 105.

  1. I think putting out regular updates and DLC would keep people interested. Especially if content from the single player campaigns were added as updates to coincide with the releases of games like Halo 5 and halo 6.

  2. God no. If you had Halo Waypoint (MP only) up all the time 24/7 people would always be playing it and after a while people would lose interest and move on to the next big thing. At least when you have numbered copies 4, 5, 6 etc, it gives people a reason to revisit their favorite MP shooter.
