New IP Hellblade from Ninja Theory – Cryptic and Beautiful

It’s been a while since Ninja Theory has shown a game, but if their track record (Heavenly Sword, DMC, and Enslaved) speaks to their ability, then they’re gonna be welcomed back to the limelight with open arms. Today, at Sony’s Gamescom Press Conference, they revealed their newest title, Hellblade. I’m not sure what I was watching, but it was gorgeous.

The trailer revolves around a relatively tribal looking scene. One which shows a warrior woman seemingly meditating before a flayed and eviscerated body which has been crucified above her. She’s in a circle which bears some unknown runes and symbols. Things get interesting when the body which should be five ways beyond dead (by our standards), begins to draw breath.

I couldn’t properly describe this one on my best day. All I can say, watch it below. If nothing else, Ninja Theory pulled out all of the stops to make Hellblade’s heroine (or villainess) and her surroundings look absolutely striking.

Given the visuals of the sky in the trailer (turning from bright and blue to a black and red), and that of the following image, we could possibly assume that there will be a good and evil (or heaven and hell) focus to be found in Hellblade. Oh… and in the title as well.

My Opinion:

The woman in this trailer kind of reminds me of Nariko (Heavenly Sword), but that’s not surprising considering Ninja Theory is behind creating her and our unnamed woman in the trailer. All I can really say is that this trailer caught my interest. I just can’t wait to hear more about Hellblade in the coming months!
