It has been made clear to the public today that Sony will be raising the price of their PlayStation Plus subscription in a number of select countries. Currently South Africa, Ukraine, Russia, Turkey and India are the only countries to be affected.
Changes to the price in South Africa, according to reports, have already been made. In a massive price jump, a three month subscription increased from R145 to R219 ($12.88 to $19.46), with a yearly subscription being raised from R489 to R749 ($43.45 to $66.55).
As for plans on increasing fees in the United States, Sony has stated that “currently, price adjustments are not being planned for PS Plus in the SCEA [North American] region.” Similar comments were made in regards to any changes to be made within the UK or EU, stating that customers would be notified of any changes being made.
My Opinion:
I have mixed feelings about this move by Sony. I can understand why the company would make this move, as it will allow them to improve PSN even more, but I feel it shouldn’t be at the cost of the players own wallets. I also feel that this could also a foreshadowing of what is to come in the future for NA / EU players… I guess we will see in the next few years.
