Head of Xbox Says Minecraft Sequel Not Certain

Microsoft is in the midst of purchasing Minecraft’s creators, Mojang. The acquisition left some Minecraft lovers uncertain about the future of their favorite game but Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, claimed that a Minecraft sequel was not imminent.

On IGN’s Podcast Unlocked Phil Spencer maintained:

“I don’t actually get a lot of ‘you must do something with this I.P.’ from [Xbox].  I think we earn permission to do other things with Minecraft when we meet the desires around what the franchise is. I don’t think Minecraft 2 is the thing that makes the most sense. Job one is to go out and meet the needs of the Minecraft community first and then we can think about ways we can help grow it.”

But he does caution:

“It doesn’t mean everything we’re going to do is going to map to 100% of [players] because I don’t know if there is any topic that where 100% of people agree.”

One thing Spencer hinted at was an attempt to streamline the servers so that PC, consoles, and mobile platforms could play together.

In related news, Mojang announced that it’s new title Scrolls will be arriving in November.

My Opinion:

My PS Vita has recently become my Minecraft machine so the what lies ahead in terms of Sony’s involvement with the game is unclear. Minecraft is still selling very well across all platforms but I’m not sure it will do well enough to make its money back quickly for Microsoft. I think they look at Mojang and Minecraft as very long-term investments. The thing I am most worried about, and this is pure speculation, is if Microsoft will use a micro transaction or monthly pay plan in the future. What do you think about Minecraft’s future?
