Last month, it was revealed that Club Nintendo members who register both Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will receive veteran fighter Mewtwo as free DLC early next year. At first, Nintendo said this was the only way to obtain Mewtwo, but now we have evidence that this DLC will actually be made available to purchase in the future.
As found on Nintendo of Europe’s Club Nintendo page, Mewtwo will initially be distributed to those who purchase both versions of Super Smash Bros. and register them on Club Nintendo. Later, the character will be available to those who did not (or could not) get both versions of the game.
This was probably inevitable, as requiring the registration of both the Wii U and 3DS games would leave some gamers without the new content. While handheld gamers may buy their own version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, households will likely only buy one copy of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
Mewtwo will join the battle in Spring 2015 (for those who purchase both games), with widespread distribution to happen “in the future”.
As someone who owns both games, it’s awesome that I get Mewtwo for free, but I’m also glad everyone else can also get the DLC. I also hope this opens the door for other characters and stages in the future.
