Nintendo has many games that are perfect for Let’s Players, like Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8. However, their new partnership program on YouTube has rubbed some people the wrong way, like YouTube celebrity PewDiePie.
For those who do not know, PewDiePie, aka Felix Kjellberg, is a Let’s Player that is the most subscribed YouTuber at over 34 million at the time of writing this article. On his Tumblr post, he talked about Nintendo’s new partnership program for YouTubers.
Briefly said, Nintendo’s program agrees to take 40% of all ad revenue for each individual video that is registered. If an entire channel registers with Nintendo, then the company takes 30% of all revenue from all of the channel’s videos, whether or not the videos contain anything Nintendo-related. The program is set to roll out in May 2015.
Kjellberg stated on Tumblr:
“I … think this is a slap in the face to the YouTube channels that does focus on Nintendo game exclusively. The people who have helped and showed passion for Nintendo’s community are the ones left in the dirt the most. … [W]hen there’s just so many games out there to play. Nintendo games just went to the bottom of that list. Even if more publishers starts implementing this idea of sharing revenue. Then fine, there’s always going to be plenty of games out there, ready to become the next “Mienkraft” – Sounds cheesy, but it’s true.”
He also said that while he is not going to stop making Nintendo videos, he urges Nintendo to change their policy.
My Opinion:
Before I start on this topic, I urge people to watch either one of the following videos: TotalBiscuit’s video on the situation or Boogie2988’s explanation of Nintendo’s new policy. Nintendo is the only company at the moment that wants all the revenue they can get. This doesn’t let YouTubers keep some of their money; it pushes people away from making videos with Nintendo games. As many people say, YouTube videos are essentially free advertising, and many of the video views people get are for the people behind the game and not just the game itself. Nintendo, I hope you get your stuff together and let people keep their money.

Its okay he can play any game he wants and he’ll still have an audience. He’d still get 60% and he can make a special Nintendo channel to get 70%. Its not a bad deal if you’re making $3,000 every 1 million hits.
