Amazon May Have Saved Crytek

Crytek was facing financial trouble last year, and it looks as if Amazon may have saved them.

Kotaku has received information from unnamed sources that Amazon has spent a significant amount of money on Crytek’s CryEngine 3. The actual amount of money is still unclear; both $50 million and $70 million were numbers given by two different sources.

The reason for the deal can be linked back to Crytek’s troubles last year. The company started bleeding money and it got so bad that it could not pay many of its employees. In March, about a year after the incident, it was reported Crytek had entered an agreement with a big company. While neither companies have confirmed this piece of news, it looks like it is true.

Amazon has slowly been getting into the gaming space. Double Helix, developer of the Killer Instinct reboot, was purchased by them recently. They have also recently founded a first party gaming studio that primarily makes games for their Fire TV and other Android devices. This licensing deal could be the start of something bigger.

My Opinion:

This news came out of left field; I know Amazon starting developing games recently but for them to enter a deal with a bigger developer is shocking. It could just be better looking mobile games, but this is from the company who planned on drone deliveries, so I guess we should expect the unexpected from them.
