In 2011, the Oddworld franchise was brought out of dormancy with an HD version of Stranger’s Wrath. This was followed up with an HD version of Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee in 2012 and a complete remake of Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, called Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty, in 2014. In 2013, a poll was run on the official Oddworld website asking fans what game they wanted after New ‘n’ Tasty. The top voted answer was a complete remake of the series’ second game, Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus, and Lorne Lanning confirmed that game was being worked on in early 2015. However, Oddworld: Soulstorm was revealed today and looks to be something more than just a remake.
Soulstorm will follow Abe as he and 300 other Mudokons (oppressed workers that Abe saved in New ‘n’ Tasty) traverse across a desert. The game is going to be a “story retake inspired by [the] original tale”. Lorne Lanning says:
“There was a deeper, darker, and more sinister story that we never got to tell. [Soulstorm] gives us the opportunity to flesh out more meat on the bones of an original spine, but re-tell the fable from a very different angle.”
Right now, the website is teasing the new design of Abe. It sounds as if he will receive similar abilities to the ones in Abe’s Exoddus, but the site also teases brand new mechanics. New info will be revealed via Kinda Funny Games soon and the full game is due out in the back half of 2017.
A somewhat new Oddworld game is exciting to see. I never played Abe’s Exoddus, so I am happy to get the chance to experience a version of the game that seems to be closer to their original vision.
