Sony Unveils Bravia TVs with PlayStation Now

Sony pulled back the curtain on its new line of Bravia 4K Ultra HD televisions with the upcoming PlayStation Now, allowing for viewers to stream PlayStation 3 games directly to their televisions without the need for a console.

Three new series and a total of nine televisions ranging in price from $2,100 to $25,000 are planned to be released in June. These TVs will be able to stream PS3 games via PlayStation Now, provided consumers have a DualShock 3 to connect to the TV.

Mike Fasulo, president of Sony Electronics said, “We continue to be the only company that offers a complete lineup of consumer 4K products, including TVs, front projectors, cameras, and camcorders, while also leading the industry in providing 4K content…. We strongly believe 4K is the future for entertainment, and we remain committed to leading the 4K movement, from lens to living room, in a way that only a company like Sony can.”

This could give consumers an indication that PlayStation Now will launch by June before these televisions release. As leaked earlier this month, the service has entered a second stage of the beta, with 19 games to test out.

My Opinion

I have mixed feelings about this news. On one hand, this could kill any potential in a PlayStation 5 if Sony perfects this technology. Also, the people who would want this technology and pay $25000 for a television would most likely own a $400 PS4. On the other hand, streaming video games using a TV? If this technology could be expanded, then endless possibilities can be unlocked. Imagine this for a moment: You own a nice $1000 4K TV. You decide on an impulse buy to get Morpheus. You go to work and bring Morpheus with you. On your lunch break, you watch TV and play PS3 games using Morpheus via streaming. This could potentially happen if Sony perfects this technology. Oh, yeah. I cannot wait until June.
