Nintendo’s Mystery Hardware, E3 Hypothesis

There have been a ton of rumors and speculation spreading that Nintendo is in fact, going to show new hardware at this year’s E3. All rumors have leaked from pretty significant sources. Peer Schneider at IGN suggested Nintendo has some new hardware up its sleeve. Along with that, there are news stories sprouting all throughout the internet, and third-party developers also claim there will be games to accompany this new hardware. Nintendo has commented on the rumors stating they will not unveil new hardware at E3 2014. However, I wouldn’t put it past them to try and keep something under the wraps.

Both the Wii U and 3DS are relatively new consoles, so what could this new hardware be? Here’s a list of five ideas I’ve come up with. Take it with a grain of salt.

1. Gamecube Fifteen Year Anniversary Wii U Controller

This may be a long shot, but there are two reasons why this would make a lot of sense. One, the Nintendo GameCube’s fifteen year anniversary is right around the corner. Nintendo hasn’t been shy in the past when it came to celebrating a console’s/game’s birthday. Two, Super Smash Bros. Wii U is coming to stores “Winter 2014”. Gamers (including myself) want to play Smash Bros. with the classic GCN controller. It would be an excellent way for the Big N to promote SSB, maybe even have a bundle of some sort?

2. Discless Wii U

Nintendo has been heavy on digital games for the past year and a half. I think it would make a lot of sense for them to announce a 350GB, (more or less) discless Wii U SKU. Push that out of the door before the holidays at retail price of (let’s say) $249.99? Mom and dad would jump right on that! I know I would.

3. Rob the Robot Returns!

Nuff’ said.

4. New 3DS SKU

Imagine this, Nintendo announces a brand new 3DS SKU. For example, the new 3DS Lite! It has better resolution, two circle pads, and a 32GB SD card. It’s around the same size as the original 3DS, but with much larger screens. Then, icing on the cake, Metroid is announced as the first big FPS on 3DS. Mind blown? (A person can only dream.)

5. “3DS U”

An all new, all-in-one 3DS/Wii U Gamepad! It acts as either console! I know that this isn’t likely at all. But hey, I wouldn’t put it past Nintendo. They did make a 2DS.

There could be many possibilities of what’s to come at E3 this June. Could it be new Hardware? Or an attachment of some sort? Will Nintendo take the third pillar approach again? Or maybe they’re telling the truth, and have no Hardware to announce. All we can do is wait it out. Just five more weeks!

  1. You want the screens to be bigger, add a circle pad (which btw, the Circle Pad Pro had extra shoulder buttons too) but somehow be “lite” despite the fact that it wouldn’t be lighter if it was the same size of the OG 3DS? Also, higher res screen is never going to happen, that would make the new model an entirely new system of its own. Also, it would hurt battery life and be pointless. Maybe we’ll see a 3DS model using that interchangeable parts patent or maybe a smaller Wii U Game Pad but I doubt those other 3DS Lite items.

    1. Yeah I was just using the term lite as an example but I know what you mean. This is all for fun though. Nintendo is a strange company so you never really know what’s going to come next.! I can definitely imagine a smaller gamepad. Thanks for the read!
