Today marks a new day for PC gamers. David Cole of DFC Intelligence recently told PCR, an industry news website, “On a global basis PC games have surpassed console games, but the new console systems means consoles should show an increase”. Cole credits MOBAs, MMOs, and free-to-play games as the champions of current PC gamers. Also contributing to the growth in PC gaming is Valve’s Steamplatform which has revamped how PC gamers can purchase and playgames. One final boost to the PC gaming market is that tech continues to get faster and cheaper, making PC gaming more accessible than ever before.
This statement comes in the midst of an ongoing console war, which has yet to decide its winner. PCs are generating more income for now, though consoles could no doubt retake the title due to the new systems’ acceptance of free-to-play games, and acceptance of MMOs. With titles like Elder Scrolls Online and Destiny slated to hit both Xbox Oneand PS4 soon, consoles could certainly reclaim the title.
As a life-long PC gamer this really comes as no surprise, as I have always preferred the PC. That said, I have always had a console on the side, like a mistressto keep me satisfied when I want to just lay on the couch. This can only mean good things for both sides. Gamers and developers realize that the PC is still virile and competitive in today’s market and console gamers and developers realize they aren’t the only kids on the block. PCs and consoles both have a special spot in my heart, and even though one of them just won the track-meet, I’m taking both of them out for pizza and ice-cream.
