Pokken Tournament – The Pokémon Game No One Expected

Everyone’s always chomping at the bit to hear about the next title to expand the Pokémon franchise, however Pokken Tournament might not be what people had in mind. Pokken Tournament was announced today and is going to be a fighting game brought to us by the folks that made Tekken (Bandai Namco Games).

Surprising, right? This news comes to us in the form of a trailer which features two of the many fighting type Pokémon (Machamp and Lucario) duking it out. If you’re thinking that this is going to be another Super Smash Bros., no worries, Pokken Fighter is going to play more like Tekken and Street Fighter rather than Nintendo’s famed fighter.

If you’re skeptical, check out the trailer below. It looks like Bandai Namco is going to be using a graphics engine very similar to the one used in Tekken, and it makes the two showcased fighters look good. The game will see release to Japanese arcades sometime in 2015!

My Opinion:

This is a great idea. Pokémon is a series that’s just ripe for the picking in terms of making a fighting game. They’ve got Blaziken, Machamp, Lucario, and so many other options that it’s honestly amazing that this hasn’t been done yet. The Pokémon franchise could easily revolutionize fighting games a bit as well, depending on what tropes and systems they bring into Pokken Tournament. Will there be evolutions (beyond Mega evolutions as those will clearly be included)? How big will the roster be? How will the move lists be decided? There are just so many questions and I can’t wait to hear the answers. It’d be cool to see Pokken Tournament at EVO as well. Pokken Fighter, the Pokémon game that no one expected, but everyone should be excited for.
