In many ways the world of comic books is more popular and visible than it has ever been. Marvel dominates on the big screen with blockbuster films such as Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. DC has had great success bringing its characters to television with show like Arrow, and recent arrivals Gotham and The Flash. One of the biggest shows on TV right now is The Walking Dead based on the Image comic from Robert Kirkman. Now another acclaimed comic is being brought to life for broadcast on an unlikely source, PlayStation.
Fans at this years New York Comic Con were treated to the first footage of Sony Entertainment’s adaptation of comic book series Powers. Created by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, the book is a blend of superheroes, police procedurals, and crime noir. Homicide detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim are tasked with investigating cases involving people with superhuman abilities, known as “powers.”
Produced by Sony Entertainment TV, the show will feature 10 episodes, airing exclusively on the PlayStation Network. Anyone with a PSN account will be able to watch the first episode, while the full season will be free for PlayStation Plus subscribers. My Opinion:
Powers is one of those comic book series I heard a lot of positive reviews for, but never got around to reading. Bringing the series to television has been in development for awhile. I remember when it was in production at FX with Jason Patric and Lucy Punch in the two main roles. I was surprised when I first heard it made the move over to PlayStation. With comic book characters being so hot these days, it is smart move by Sony to make Powers their first foray into original scripted content for PSN. While I’m doubtful a non-gamer will buy a Sony system just to watch the series, it might swing some potential customers who were on the fence about which console to buy and is an added bonus for those who already own a PlayStation system.
