Naughty Dog Artist Draws Shadow of the Colossus Artwork

Naughty Dog artist Andrew Maximov created some fan artwork for Shadow of the Colossus and it’s amazing!

Team Ico’s Shadow of the Colossus has inspired gamers and artists for nearly 10 years and Andrew Maximov is the latest to create some breathtaking artwork.

The picture was originally posted on Polycount, but Dualshockers reached out for an interview, which you can read below. You can also see the stages in which Andrew draws this wonderful piece of artwork.

When asked why he chose Shadow of the Colossus he said:

There are very few games like it, as it manages to achieve a very deep emotional response while stripping away the majority of what most other games deem essential these days. Doing more with less is a sign of great art in my humble opinion.

Furthermore, Andrew said that doing projects like this in his “free time” help him become a better artist:

I don’t get to work on them too often between all the other technical and educational work I do in my “free time”, but I really like to. This definitely helps me be a better artist. The medium is not as relevant as the thought process. I’m not really looking to get better at painting, but rather in composition, lighting, detail distribution and color.

Finally, he said he’s planning on drawing more fan art in the near future:

Everything I paint is usually inspired be something: a game, a view or a movie, but I try to avoid direct references because it leaves more freedom to change the piece as you go and also allows you to exercise your imagination as if there were no constraints at all. Rather then with an existing style you’re trying to represent. For example Shadow of the Colossus has a pretty muted, olive tinted color palette and that was hard for me to balance with my personal affection with vibrant clean colors. But yeah, as soon as I get some free time I definitely have to paint something. FFX probably 🙂

Andrew is currently working on Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. If you would like to see more of his artwork you can check out his personal website.

My Opinion:

Personally, it’s the amount of detail shown in this picture which makes it so special. Furthermore, I really think that Andrew captures the grand scale of Shadow of the Colossus.
