In a recent interview with Game Informer, Bruce Straley and Neil Druckmann — Co-Directors at Naughty Dog — demonstrated their desire to continue to excel in the video game industry by wanting to make Uncharted 4 “one of the best games out there.”

Druckmann stated that the team has a real “hunger” to do something not seen in the first three Uncharted games.

They played them, and if they wanted to go back to them, they’d just play those. The challenge is trying to find that and to make sure all those new systems work in order to make a game they’ll be proud of playing themselves.

Straley agreed with this statement, adding that the drive and pressure is created from inside the studio and not outside. Straley added that everybody working on the project wants to create something that they could be proud of and would also be able to say “This is Uncharted 4.”

Straley mentioned that making a game like Uncharted 4 is not easy. They have to find the right balance balance between making it fun, respecting the schedules and hitting the right frame rates.

Druckmann added that — during brainstorming sessions — when someone says something is too difficult, someone else will respond with “we’re Naughty Dog.” That statement carries so much weight and importance that the studio wants to ensure it still means something in the future.

Straley ended by stating that not everything always goes smoothly. He gave an example of the PlayStation experience demo being “broken in so many different ways” just a couple of weeks before the presentation. However, with the work of the astounding people at Naughty Dog, they were able to get the job done on time.

My Opinion

Naughty Dog is without a doubt one of the best game developers today. To hear that they still strive to be the best is only comforting and I can’t wait to see how awesome Uncharted 4 is later this year!
