UPDATE: PlayStation Store One-Time Discount This Weekend

Update:

Sony says that the one-time 10% discount for all PSN members can not be used for pre-orders.

On the official PlayStation Blog, a number of items were announced as eligible for discount application, including pre-orders, but Sony has promptly updated the page, noting that it was in error. Sony also apologized for the confusion.

Other exceptions to the promotion listed on the original blog post are PS Plus subscriptions, Music Unlimited, PS Now, and video rental content.

Original Article:

This weekend, from 9:00 AM PST January 23rd through 9:00 AM January 26th, Sony is offering PlayStation Plus subscribers a 10% discount on one purchase from the PlayStation Store.

These savings come in addition to the five day extension for PS Plus members whose free trial or subscription services were affected by the holiday outage on December 25th.

According to Sony, the discount will be available on the PlayStation Store and via @PlayStation, and can be used on “hundreds of thousands of items” from the store.

As for the extra five days of PS Plus, Sony will soon be emailing confirmations of the extension to customers. It does not require any form of redemption from users as it will be automatically applied to existing subscriptions.

My Opinion:

This is not unfamiliar territory for Sony. When PSN went down in the past, Sony offered its customers similar placating remedies. It’s unfortunate that this time it was a paid service interrupted at a time when it should have been prepared not only for a surge of new customers, but also the form of attack that cascaded upon it.

Although the five day extension for PS Plus subscribers is a nice way of apology, this 10% discount does cheapen it a little. While it may seem generous at first, let’s not forget that PSN puts on some flash sales with more incentive to buy. It oddly feels like a way for Sony to profit from its own disaster.
