Sony Online Entertainment Bought Out and Changes Name

Sony Online Entertainment will no longer be developing Sony exclusive games.

The developer behind H1Z1 and Planetside 2 was acquired by Columbus Nova.  The team changed its name to Daybreak Game Company and will now act as an independent developer.

“This means that effective immediately SOE will operate as an independent game development studio where we will continue to focus on creating exceptional online games for players around the world, and now as a multiplatform gaming company,” the studio wrote in a forum post.

The developer went on to say that this means Xbox One and mobile games will be coming in the future.

John Smedley, the president of the company, took to Twitter shortly after the announcement was made to share his excitement on making Xbox One games.

So what does this mean for the company’s existing IPs? Not much really.  Games like DC Universe Online and H1Z1 will continue to be supported and developed.  There is no news on whether or not those games will make it to Xbox One, but Daybreak Games Company plans to “embrace the multi-platform world.”

My Opinion:

I imagine that some Sony fanboys aren’t too thrilled about this, however I think this is great news.  I can’t wait to see what Daybreak Games Company will do in the future now that it can act as an independent developer.
