Mother Russia Bleeds Cranks Beat `Em Up Games To The Next Level

Take a classic beat `em up like Streets of Rage, mix in the intense violence and psychedelic trippiness of Hotline Miami– What do you get?  The answer is Mother Russia Bleeds from French developer Le Cartel

Spotlighted during the indie portion of Sony’s E3 Press Conference, Mother Russia Bleeds is scheduled for release in 2016 for the PlayStation 4 and PC.  The game harkens back to classic beat `em ups, while sprinkling in modern twists.  Visually, Mother Russia Bleeds has a retro pixel art style and a dynamic soundtrack, which changes based upon action in the game.  It supports up to 4 players via local or online multi-player. Set in an alternative version of the U.S.S.R, the story centers on an imprisoned, drug-addicted anti-hero on a quest for vengeance.  In addition to a unique setting and protagonist, what immediately catches the gamer’s eye is the ultra violence on display.

Mother Russia is not a country for the squeamish. Characters in the game deliver brutally violent action from bloody, pavement pounding fisticuffs, to point-blank, brain-splattering head shots.  For an early look at the intense action in store, watch the trailer below.

My Opinion:

Many game protagonists are seeking retribution, few are doing so while jamming needles in their neck.  This game immediately stood out to me as both a fan of beat `em ups and Hotline Miami.  If Le Cartel is able to nail the classic gameplay and add some new twists, I will be in for a real treat come next year.  A shame no PlayStation Vita version has been announced yet, as Mother Russia Bleeds seems perfect for it.
