We should not have to wait long for a Watch Dogs sequel, if announced, that’s according to the creative director Jonathan Morinn.
After being announced during Ubisoft’s E3 press conference nearly two years ago, Watch Dogs has been a game that many — including myself — have been interested in. The fact that there would be an open world game with the prospect of hacking into any device, is certainly an interesting one, especially in this day and age where technology is everywhere.
With only a month until the world wide release of Watch Dogs. The creative director of Watch Dogs, Jonathan Morinn has recently been promoting the game. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Morinn stated that work on a sequel of Watch Dogs has not started, however, if there was a sequel, Morinn claimed that “It’s certainly not going to be the same amount of time if we ever embark on such a journey,” he continued. “A big part of it was defining whatever Watch Dogs is. Once you have that starting point, then what becomes interesting is what players want more of – what comes next?”
Morinn then started to talk about Ubisoft’s decision to delay Watch Dogs, praising them for giving Watch Dogs a chance to be something great. “Especially with the delay we have just been really concentrating on getting it [the original Watch Dogs] launched. After that we’ll see where it goes – I think Ubisoft is showing more and more that they’re willing to take the time for it to be right.”
Morinn then finished up by saying that he is happy with the game and hinting that they already have ideas for a sequel. “I think we’re in a pretty good shape,” Morin continued. “I certainly like the idea of going deeper in the thematics – the hyperconnectivity and hacking in an entire city, controlling a city, monitoring everyone.” Morinn then added. “There’s stuff we discovered by making Watch Dogs that are interesting to pursue“.
The prospect of Watch Dogs having a sequel is not a new one. In-fact, last July, The A List Daily had an interview with Tony Key (Ubisoft’s senior vice president of sales and marketing). In the interview, Key was asked if Ubisoft wanted Watch Dogs to be the next big franchise for the company, to which, Key replied with “Absolutely. That’s what all our games are about; we won’t even start if we don’t think we can build a franchise out of it. There’s no more fire and forget – it’s too expensive.” Key continued. “We feel like we’re in a really good place with Watch_Dogs, but until we’re the biggest game of the year we’re not going to be satisfied.”
My Opinion
I do not find this news surprising. From the first moment Ubisoft announced Watch Dogs it always was going to be a franchise. The only way, Watch Dogs does not become a franchise is if it sells below expectation which I highly doubt; Watch Dogs has been a very anticipated game since its reveal back in 2012. Also, the fact that it is one of the only big games coming out in the next couple of months should make it a success. Now, obviously I can not speak on whether I like Watch Dogs or not, as I have not played it. I can say that I am excited for it! Open world games are always my favourite, and hopefully this one will be good!
