If you’re a fan of the Attack on Titan series and an owner of a Nintendo 3DS, this is a time for you to rejoice and I’ll tell you why. Sources from Spike Chunsoft, the developers behind the 3DS title Attack on Titan: The Last Wings of Mankind, have revealed that the company is looking to bring the game to U.S. shores.
For those unfamiliar with the Attack on Titan anime, it tells the tale of a world where gigantic humanoids called Titans have pushed mankind to the brink. There is only one walled city left in the world and the story follows the soldiers charged to protect it from this lumbering, human-devouring, behemoths. However, the story is far too complex (and full of spoilers) for me to summarize fully here.
Of course, the news of Spike Chunsoft looking to expand to the states comes as no surprise considering just how much popularity the series has accumulated in the U.S. Apparently the game is so popular in Japan that producers had difficulty meeting the demand. Within the first week, Wings of Mankind had sold over 93,000 retail copies. By the time February rolled around, Spike Chunsoft had moved over 240,000 retail copies of Wings. Considering that those numbers are retail alone, the likelihood of those numbers undercutting actual sales figures are high.
The game saw its Japanese release on December 5th, 2013. Hopefully Spike Chunsoft can find someone to help publish the title here in America soon.
My Opinion
I think this is great news. I always like to see anime titles seeing American releases. I’m not saying that all of the games end up being good eggs, but as a long time on-and-a-little-off anime fan I just like seeing this kind of thing. Anime always seem to have some of the most interesting characters with rather intriguing abilities. I’ve always loved the abilities and powers of the Naruto and Dragon Ball series, so of course I was overjoyed when those fighting games started leaking into the market. The same goes for Bleach, One Piece, and (hopefully soon) Fairy Tale. I think that the recent influx of anime games is a good sign that East and West are further merging. Who wouldn’t want more cool series and games based off of them?
