According to the trailer for ABZU that was shown at the Sony E3 Press Conference, “Ab” means water, and “zu” means “to know.” That said, I have very little idea of what exactly is going on in this game which developer Giant Squid Studios is bringing to us. However, I gotta tell ya, that’s not a bad thing.
Without knowing very much about ABZU I can tell you that it’s easily the most peaceful trailer to come out of E3 this year. The solemn sounds of a woman singing in the background really fit the aquatic nature of the trailer. If I had to just guess, I would tell you that ABZU is an underwater exploration game. Considering the nature of the title itself, that might be a safe bet.
ABZU will be Giant Squid Studios’ debut title and however vague this trailer is, it’s beauty and looks are enough to gain attention. It appears that ABZU is going to be a kind of modern fantasy as a lot of the animals seen in the trailer are fairly familiar.
It’s not until about midway through the trailer that things begin to look a bit strange. To be more specific, we witness a looming, gigantic, figure in the background as the player swims by, and a white, glowing chasm where the world seems to flip upside down. Then again, it is the depths of the ocean, who knows what’s down there? Take a look for yourself at what might await us in this PlayStation 4 exclusive title.
My Opinion:
I think ABZU honestly might of won me over in the same way that No Man’s Sky did nearly a year ago. I am a sucker for the artistically different when it comes to video games. If that means that the game is animated in a way that’s not around as much anymore (Hyper Light Drifter) or if the game just has a different color palette than gray (No Man’s Sky). I have no idea what’s going on in ABZU and that doesn’t worry me. It looks interesting and I’ll be on the look out for more info pertaining to our box-head protagonist.
