Ah, the ol’ Super Mario Bros. movie. The poster child of failed video game movies. Loved by some, mocked by many. But love it or hate, it’s coming to Blu-Ray in the UK, and it comes with a special treat: a brand-new documentary featuring interviews from the cast and crew.
Titled This Ain’t No Video Game, the new doc features new interviews with co-directors Rocky Morton and Annabel Jenkel, cast members John Leguizamo and Richard Edson, and other various artists and visual effects designers. It also features an archive interview with the late Bob Hoskins.
Released in 1993, the Super Mario Bros. film was a critical and financial failure. The film earned only $20 million at the box office, less than half of its budget. Despite this, the film was nominated for two Saturn awards (Best Costume and Best Make-Up), and has a loyal cult following.
The Blu-Ray launches in the UK on November 3rd. There is no word yet of a US release.
While the movie was no blockbuster, it’s not nearly as terrible as some would have you believe. Despite the bizarre interpretations of the Mario universe, it’s an interesting movie with pretty good special effects for the 90s. I’m definitely interesting in seeing the documentary, so if/when it’s released in the US, I’ll be picking up a copy.
