Microsoft Buying Mojang?

It looks like Microsoft may be calling Minecraft its own as the Xbox powerhouse may be in talks for buying Mojang, the studio behind the major indie title.

According to The Wall Street Journal (who spoke with a “person with knowledge” about the deal) and Bloomberg, Microsoft is in talks to buy the studio for more than $2 billion dollars. Markus Persson (a.k.a. Notch), the man who started Mojang who goes by Notch, will supposedly be likely to leave the development studio after the deal has gone through.

Minecraft, although the first and only game to be released by Mojang, has been ported to iOS, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360, with plans to bring the game to the PlayStation Vita. Mojang is also working on two more games, Cobalt and Scrolls.

My Opinion:

No. NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I do not like this decision if this goes through. Even though Minecraft has been massively successful, it isn’t enough to warrant a purchase of the studio, especially if Notch leaves. What if Mojang is a one-trick pony? Microsoft would be taking a dive into the unknown. While I love Microsoft buying studios for a symbiotic relationship, this may be jumping the gun. Also, if I don’t get my Minecraft Vita, I will not be happy. At all.

  1. It’s sad to see Microsoft resorting to stuff like this and the Tomb Raider deal. They have the coin and we are all well aware of it. They want to buy their success as opposed to working hard for it. Why not invest some of that money into creating more internal studios and coming up with new unique IPs? Sony has showed first party studios are how you build some great games and give your consumers confidence in your brand. I hope the deal doesn’t go through, but I figure you’ll still see Minecraft thrive on other platforms even if it does. It doesn’t make financial sense for them to limit future content releases for Minecraft to just the Xbox platforms, and it would enrage gamers even more which they just can’t afford at this point.
