Nintendo announced that not all amiibo figures for Nintendo will be freely available. Nintendo’s president, Satoru Iwata, announced during Nintendo’s financial briefing that some amiibo figures will be available as “limited-time offers” for the Wii U and 3DS.
Iwata stated:
“The amiibo figure lineup for “Super Smash Bros.” will continue to be released even after this year-end sales season, and we hope that this will help to update store shelves. As store shelf space is limited, some amiibo will remain stocked on the shelves as staple choices while some will be limited-time offers which will cede their positions to new ones once they are sold out.”
Amiibo figures are a new feature for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games that allow players to attach collectible figurines to their GamePads/handheld consoles in order to interact with their favorite Nintendo characters. Currently, amiibo figures are scheduled to be released at the same time in the U.S. as Super Smash Bros. for Wii U on November 21st this year, and will be available for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS in 2015. The amiibo figures will be released in two “waves” of famous Super Smash Bros., characters with the first wave being released on the November date and the second wave being released a month later in December.
My Opinion:
Amiibo figures seems like an interesting concept. Certainly, the Skylanders figurines have been a huge commercial success. I can’t personally see myself going out and buying any, but I definitely wouldn’t mind getting some for the holiday season. It’ll be interesting to see how they will progress past Super Smash Bros.
