After the recent announcement of the Wii U’s spike in sales, Nintendo has more good news in store. According to a Bloomberg interview with Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Amie, pre-orders for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U have surpassed those of Mario Kart 8 and are currently at a record high.
“The launch of Mario Kart 8 has essentially doubled our Wii U sales year-on-year,” said the Nintendo Legend. “Our expectation is that the sell-through for Smash is going to be very strong, certainly on par with what we saw with Mario Kart 8. We think the impact on hardware will be similarly dramatic.”
If Super Smash Bros. for Wii U does generate enough sales, Fils-Amie believes this could also help generate more third-party support for the Wii U. “Consumers buy the hardware so they can play the software,” he stated. “When you have a robust library of games, that’s when consumers jump in.”
My Opinion:
This is great news for Nintendo. They need to move more consoles. Not for the sake of competing with Sony and Microsoft but rather in order to reach their own projections. As far as third-party support goes, I personally think It’s necessary even if the Wii U begins to sell well.
