Daybreak Game Company, formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment, has been hit with layoffs shortly after its sale to investment firm Columbus Nova.
Daybreak spokesperson Michele Cagle said both its San Diego, CA and Austin, TX studios are being affected by the layoffs. The move is a “strategic decision to rationalize the business.”
“This alignment of resources better positions the newly independent studio for future growth opportunities and developments. The company will continue on its mission to partner with its player community to drive the future.”
EverQuest franchise director of development David Georgeson was one of those affected by the layoffs. No further details are known on the amount of positions that were terminated.
Daybreak Game Company recently released the paid alpha version of it’s zombie-themed MMO H1Z1 on PC. They are excited to be able to develop games for Xbox platforms now that they are independant and not tied to Sony.
My Opinion:
While it isn’t good to see people lose their jobs, this is a very typical thing to see when a company is acquired by someone new. I hope these moves allow this development studio to be successful, and possibly hire more in the future. I wish all the best to those who lost their jobs.

After every game comes out there are always layoffs. The buy out timing probably means they’re here to milk cows, not raise calves.

Anyone here big players of this studio’s games? I thought DCUO was a solid game, I just am not into that universe enough for it to have really stuck.
